Join us for an insightful day as Victim Support Malta hosts a conference dedicated to raising awareness and understanding of ADHD. This event welcomes diagnosed individuals as well as professionals from the health, business, and educational sectors,  as well as parents, and anyone eager to learn more about ADHD. With concise, engaging sessions led by professionals from various fields, you’ll gain practical insights into the challenges and opportunities associated with ADHD. Network with others during our stand-up lunch and leave equipped with new perspectives and strategies to support yourself and other individuals with ADHD in both their personal and professional settings.

ADHD and Risk Taking: Gambling and other risky behaviours

Dr. Maris Catania - Psychologist

Dr. Maris Catania, a Chartered Psychologist, has 14+ years of experience in game integrity and safer gambling. Currently a Senior Safer Gaming Consultant at SG:certified, she develops effective content and supports clients on safer gambling issues. Previously, as Head of Responsible Gaming at Kindred, she led the responsible gambling strategy, research projects, and created the Player Safety – Early Detection System (PS-EDS).

​

Dr. Catania holds a PhD from Nottingham Trent University, focusing on consumer protection and responsible gambling, along with MSc degrees in Occupational Psychology, Addiction Studies, and Artificial Intelligence (in progress). A three-time recipient of the Gambling Compliance Research Award, she also lectures at the University of Malta on gambling psychology and behavioral addiction.

Dragan Donkov - Business Coach

Dragan Donkov is a Progress Partner for Leaders and Teams, an accredited (EMCC) Senior Coach Practitioner, and a Team Coach. He specialises in empowering individuals and teams to build self-awareness, gain clarity and confidence, and focus on what truly matters to them.

 

With over a decade of leadership experience in the mental health sector, Dragan brings expertise in leadership development, conflict resolution, team dynamics, effective communication, navigating change, and fostering self-awareness. His work also addresses critical areas such as empathy, intelligence, burnout, and stress management.

ADHD Through the Stages of Life

Dr. Nigel Camilleri - Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr. Nigel Camilleri, MD, graduated from the University of Malta in 2003 and began psychiatry training at Mount Carmel Hospital in 2006. He continued his training in the UK from 2008. Since 2015, he has served as a Consultant Psychiatrist and Clinical Lead for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry at Mount Carmel and St. James Hospital, Malta.

Previously, he worked in adolescent psychiatry and forensic units in Middlesborough and County Durham, UK.

 

An Associate Clinical Researcher at Newcastle University, he collaborates with the Paediatric Bipolar Disorder Team. Recently awarded an MD for his research on youth mental health, Dr. Camilleri is also a UK-Certified ADOS-2 Trainer and serves as: Clinical Lead; Team for Assessment of Attention and Social Communication (TAASC)

Julianne Grima - Business Leader / Psychotherapist / ADHD Coach

Julianne Grima is a seasoned psychotherapist with 22 years of experience, a clinical supervisor, and an accomplished executive chairperson of TBWA\ANG and Victim Support Malta. She also serves on the board of Victim Support Europe. As a certified ADHD life coach by the IACT Center in Canada, Julianne blends her professional expertise with personal insight, having been diagnosed with ADHD (combined) in adulthood.

 

With nearly two decades of leadership roles in business and the NGO sector, she has developed a deep interest in exploring the interplay between hyperactivity and creativity, and how neurodivergence can inspire innovative leadership. Julianne is passionate about guiding teams toward success while embracing unique strengths and perspectives, fostering collaboration without chaos.

Mariella Dimech - Psychotherapist

Ms. Mariella Dimech has been working within the social field for more than forty years. As one of the pioneers in Addiction Rehabilitation in Malta she spent 20 years helping to build the services that exist today. This experience as well as her academic studies in psychology at the University of Malta led her to further specialize in identifying the underlying mental and emotional problems that lead persons to sabotage their own sense of well-being.

 

For the past decade she has been working in her private clinic addressing various aspects of her client’s needs and constantly focusing on empowering them to know how to reach their potential in healthy ways. At present she is also conducting a national research project as well as running workshops and seminars on mental and emotional

well-being.

Davina Schembri - Educational Psychologist

Davina Schembri is an educational psychologist who works within both the public (School Psychological Service) and private sector. She earned her B.A. in Philosophy and Psychology and  Higher Diploma in Psychology,  from the University of Malta. In 2015, she completed an MSc in Education (Child Development and Education) at the University of Oxford.

 

After gaining experience working as a psychology assistant with the School Psychological Service, she further advanced her qualifications by obtaining a Master of Psychology (Educational Psychology) from the University of Malta. Besides carrying psycho-educational assessments and interventions; Davina has also run groups with children on social-emotional awareness and is a guest lecturer at the University of Malta. Her professional interests include collaborating with families and supporting children with neurodevelopmental disorders.

The aim of ADHD Malta is to support, empower, educate and encourage anyone dealing with the neurodevelopmental condition known as “Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder”; hereinafter referred to as “ADHD” and related conditions, and to advocate for the rights of people with ADHD.

Mastering Focus: Strategies for Self-Regulation in ADHD

Gaby Meli  - Occupational Therapist

Gaby is an Occupational Therapist, graduated from the University of Malta. She currently works in the field of pediatrics and a huge part of her role for the past 7 years has been supporting individuals with ADHD and other neurodiverse conditions. Gaby holds a Master's degree in Human Rights from the University of London and is currently specializing in Ayres Sensory Integration Therapy. She also serves as a Clinical Practice Educator at the University

of Malta.

 

Her 12 years of experience volunteering with communities both locally and internationally have also significantly fueled her passion for empowering individuals, promoting inclusion, and embracing diversity in all aspects of life.

The Connection Between Trauma and ADHD

Dr. Gabriel Ellul - Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr. Gabriel Ellul, a psychiatrist, graduated as a Medical Doctor from the University of Malta in 2015 and specialized in psychiatry in 2023. He holds a Master’s in Bioethics, earning the Dean’s Award and Dissertation Award. During his training, he worked at London’s Maudsley Hospital, specializing in trauma psychiatry and body-based psychotherapy. He continues collaborating with UK colleagues and is a member of the International Society for Studies on Dissociation and Trauma.

​

Currently, Dr. Ellul is the Medical and Psychiatric Director at Polaris Consultancy, heads Simblija Care Home's medical team, and consults for Victim Support Malta. His interests include childhood trauma, ADHD, Complex PTSD, and personality disorders, with research focusing on trauma's impact on personality development

and neuroethics.

ADHD and Addiction: Breaking the Cycle

Dr. Kristian Sant - Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr Kristian Sant M.D. (Melit) CCT (Psych) MSc (Addictions) is a consultant general adult and addiction psychiatrist. He started studying medicine and surgery with the University of Malta in 2005 and subsequently graduated in 2010. He pursued his studies further in psychiatry and completed specialist training in 2017.

 

He has extended his postgraduate studies to a Master of Science in Addiction studies and is a visiting lecturer with the University of Malta, teaching both at an undergraduate and postgraduate level. Dr Sant has a special interest in addiction psychiatry and has contributed to local research related to the addiction field.

How the educational system impacts students with ADHD.

Joanne Vella - Counsellor

Joanne began her  counselling career, in 2017, after graduating from Master of Arts in Transcultural counselling course. Her first degree is a Bachelor in Psychology. Joanne had been working in the education sector for fifteen years, in various roles. She had worked as an LSE and teacher. For the past eight years she has been working as a counsellor within the educational system, where she  works. with children in both primary and secondary schools.  Her work put in her in contact with a number of students and has given her insight into the challenges that face. It has also provided her with an understanding of the challenges educators face in adapting their learning within the current system.

 

Thus giving her a holistic approach of challenges faces by all parties and how they can be counteracted by taking on a holistic approach.With nearly two decades of leadership roles in business and the NGO sector, she has developed a deep interest in exploring the interplay between hyperactivity and creativity, and how neurodivergence can inspire innovative leadership. Julianne is passionate about guiding teams toward success while embracing unique strengths and perspectives, fostering collaboration

Bertrand Attard - Business Leader, Board Member, Strategic Innovator


Bertrand Attard is an accomplished business leader and board member with a wealth of experience across industries and regions. Known for his strategic vision and operational expertise, he has successfully led organizations in mobility, technology, and media, driving growth and delivering sustainable value.


As a board member, Bertrand brings a strong focus on governance, collaboration, and long-term impact, leveraging his cross-industry experience to navigate complex challenges and unite stakeholders.


Beyond his professional accomplishments, Bertrand is a proud husband and father to two daughters. His family’s journey with ADHD, with both his wife and elder daughter diagnosed, has shaped his leadership style, emphasizing empathy, resilience, and inclusivity.


In his personal time, Bertrand is passionate about mentoring future leaders, exploring global cultures, and advancing innovation and sustainability.

The Science Behind ADHD Medication

Dr. Anthony Zahra - Consultant Psychiatrist

Dr. Anthony Zahra is a highly experienced consultant psychiatrist specializing in general adult psychiatry with a dedicated focus on service development, research, and education. After earning an MD from the University of Malta in 2004, Dr. Zahra pursued specialist training in psychiatry,

gaining extensive experience across general adult, child and adolescent, and old age psychiatry. He is currently a fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists (UK).

 

As a consultant since 2018 at Mount Carmel Hospital, Malta,

Dr. Zahra has been pivotal in establishing critical mental health services. Notable achievements include setting up the national eating disorder clinical treatment service, implementing an acute psychiatry clinical service for Malta’s central region, and expanding the use of transcranial magnetic stimulation for various psychiatric conditions. Dr. Zahra also has a special interest in treating cognition and attention problems, further enriching the scope of care provided.

 

Dr. Zahra is a committed researcher, with work focusing on mental well-being in the workplace, evidenced by successful emotional intelligence training programs that reduced burnout among acute ward staff. In addition, Dr. Zahra has spearheaded audits and implemented standardized care plan formats

under the Mental Health Act.

 

An advocate for mental health education and awareness, Dr. Zahra teaches as a visiting assistant lecturer at the University of Malta and supervises postgraduate psychiatry trainees. Actively engaged with organizations like Victim Support Malta,

Dr. Zahra continues to drive community-focused mental 

health initiatives.
